I hate to say it, but winter is on it’s way. And beyond the holidays and the cozy nights by the fireplace many people are worried about increased utility bills.
The good news is that you don’t have to worry, there are easy things you can do right now to cut energy bills, not only this winter but all year long.
Some of the easiest things to do are just to make sure your home isn’t ‘leaking’. Lack of insulation, gaps around windows and doors, or just old windows that don’t offer enough insulation are just a few of the ways your home can be letting your warm air escape.
All of these can be taken care of with some simple fixes. Here is a list to help you get started:
1. Check the insulation levels in your attic. If you don’t know what the ‘R’ value for your home should be, ask someone at your local home improvement store.
Then add enough insulation to bring your ‘R’ value up to what it should be. This one step can save you hundreds of dollars on your utility bills by keeping all the air you’ve paid to heat in your house.
2. Lower the temperature on your thermostat. The best way to insure your house is kept at a comfortable temperature when you are there, and a lower temperature when you’re not, is to install a programmable thermostat.
3. And last, but not least, you can actually generate your own electricity and stop paying for it. This is a simple matter of installing solar panels or wind turbines. Both of which you can build yourself for little money but will save you around 80% on your utility bills…every month.
Cut energy bills now. It’s easy. Just do the things on this list and you’ll save money this winter, next summer, and for years to come.
